LION DANCE

IN SINGAPORE

Lion Dance motifs can be seen throughout Singapore Chinatown and areas within proximity like Outram Park. Souvenirs and lion dance toys for children are also present in the various tourist merchandise shops and stores that line Chinatown. The lion dance is inextricably linked with the idea of being Chinese. This is a topic that interested our group in covering it, just from how ubiquitous the motif of lion dance was throughout Singapore. Even during Chinese New Year, we witness lion dance performances and have done so even as children at that time of year. As such, it made us want to know more about it, as we realized that although lion dance has been such an ever-present event in most of our groups’ lives as Chinese Singaporeans, we did not know much about it.
